Stress Relief

Despite the technological advancements of the 20th and 21st century, our lives are becoming more and more stressful. Our intake of cigarettes and drink are increasing as we try to cope with a 21st century lifestyle. A recent survey by the University of Hull showed that tablets may not be the answer for symptoms of stress. So what methodologies or ideas are out there to help relieve a certain amount of this tension and help us to manage stress in our daily lives?

Stress Relief
A massive percentage of the adult population in the UK suggests they have suffered with stress in their lives. It is an increasing number and I dare say, a reflection on the lifestyles we live today. Stress can cause untold health problems.

Stress Management

There are several ways to try to manage stress, and eventually remove it completely from you. It is fairly well acknowledged that a 'little' stress can be good for us. It gets the adrenalin going which you can use to your advantage, in the right circumstance of course! Use it to push yourself that little bit further and use it to your advantage.

When all around people are losing their head, who keeps calm? Who around you is able to manage stress better than others? What do they do differently? How is their attitude? Notice their body language? Are they experienced? Trained? Young or old at heart? If someone can keep calm and cool under difficult situations then learn from them. Copy their actions, what they do and this may help you with your stress relief.

Do you use deep breathing techniques? This is something I've learned from a gym instructor for stress relief. Trick your body into relaxing by using deep breathing! Just breathe in slowly for a count of 7 then breathe out for a count of 11. Repeat the 7-11 breathing until your heart rate begins to slow down and your sweaty hands begin to dry! Not only can you use this technique for an exercise routine to help your breathing but also in trying to keep calm under pressure.

Do you find yourself getting worked up the silliest of things? This is clear symptoms of stress. Try to give stressful thoughts the red light "If this happens, then that might happen and then we're all up the creek!" Most of these things never happen, so why waste all that energy worrying needlessly? At the end of the day how much control do you have over these events?

The same can be said for "who put that there" try to relax. It's there now and I'm sure it can be easily put back.

What triggers stress in you? Presentations, traffic, interviews, meetings, deadlines for work…. Make your own list of stress trigger points. Be specific. Is it only presentations to a certain audience, such as management that get you worked up? Does the traffic seem unbearable at a particular time of the day? Then why not set off earlier? Have a drink before you start work? If its the traffic after work then why not meet your partner or a friend and stay in town for something to eat? This is a very basic strategy for stress relief - but it works!

Knowing what causes you stress is powerful information, as you are the one that can take action to make it less stressful.

Ok prepare for yourself for this one. Lack of sleep, poor diet and no exercise? Does any of this ring a bell? These wreak havoc on our body and mind. Its obvious, but often overlooked. Improving on these three things could dramatically reduce your stressfulness. I often find a good workout at the gym makes me feel so much better before I go to work. Take it out at the gym, rather than storing it all up inside of you!

You could also move abroad to Jamaica or somewhere exotic. Seriously though, take stock. Think about what makes you stressful or worked up, then think of ways around it. Cut it out before it strikes!
